: An attempt to burgle a leading jewellery showroom here early Friday was foiled by an employee of the shop. The burglars, however, managed to make good their escape after attacking the employee, the police said.

Manager of the showroom Satheesan, 55, who opened the shutters of the shop, located at Karanthakad, at 3.30 a.m. on Friday grew suspicious after he heard some noise in the shop. The two burglars panicked and hit him on the head with a hammer before fleeing.

Mr. Satheesan has been admitted to hospital in Mangalore with serious head injuries.

The burglars entered the showroom by removing the roof tiles of an adjacent electronic showroom and drilling the sidewall. They smashed the CCTV camera system inside the showroom and tried to gain entry into the underground strong room, the police said.

Fingerprint and dog squad teams along with a police team led by Superintendent of Police S. Surendran visited the showroom as part of the investigation.
