KOZHIKODE: The Union budget has totally neglected the Public Distribution System (PDS), not only in the State but in the country as a whole, the State committee of the All Kerala Retail Ration Dealers Association has alleged.

The budget made no mention of measures to strengthen the PDS. Nothing was said about removing anomalies in the below poverty line list or including more people under the above poverty line list, M.V. Bhasheer, State working president and T. Mohammedali, State secretary, said in a release here on Monday.

The budget was silent on restoring the cut in the allotment of rice and wheat to Kerala and on steps to increase subsidy. Unlike the previous Union budgets that had made huge allotments for provision of food grains to the poorer sections, this budget failed to address this aspect, they said.

The government and the Opposition must take measures to remove these lapses in the budget so that price rise of food grains could be curtailed, it added.
