Kisan Sabha plans Secretariat march

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI-led All India Kisan Sabha would take out marches to the Secretariat and select Krishi Bhavans on January 23 as part of its nation-wide campaign to secure farmers' rights. Kisan Sabha State president K. Prakash Babu would inaugurate the march in Thiruvananthapuram. The Kisan Sabha's demands include waiver of farm loans, grant of interest-free loans to marginal farmers, pegging of farm loan interest at 4 per cent and procurement of farm produces at remunerative prices. - Special Correspondent

Consensus move flayed

THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Janata Dal State general secretary Varghese George said any consensus that overlooked the demand for special recruitment to fill vacancies reserved for Backward Communities would amount to betrayal of these communities. In a statement here on Saturday, he said three Assembly committees on Backward Communities had recommended special recruitment and the UDF too had promised it at the time of the last Assembly elections. The present proposal for consensus amounted to nothing short of an attempt to sabotage reservation, he added. - Special Correspondent

Explosive powder seized

KANNUR: The Valapattanam police seized a small quantity of gun powder and some paper containers found abandoned at Narikkundamvayal, near Valapattanam, on Saturday. The police said that gunpowder weighing 2.5 kg. packed in paper and 18 containers made of paper were found in a plastic bag in an uninhabited spot. The police said that the containers were meant to be used for making explosive devices. - Staff Reporter

John Joseph was elected the president of the South Indian Bank Employees Association for the 2006-2008 period at the 34th biannual conference of the association held in Alappuzha. Nodal Officer for Vasthu Vidya

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: P.N.Suresh, Executive Director of the Vasthu Vidya Gurkulam, an institution under the control of the State Cultural Department at Aranmula, has been given charge as National Nodal Officer for Vasthu Vidya and allied heritage conservation by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry. The main duties of the Nodal Officer include the setting up of a national committee with the cooperation of the State Governments, reorientation of the branch of science with more attention to environmental factors to give it contemporary relevance, drawing up of action plans to protect traditional technical expertise and preparation of a blueprint for a national unification. - Special Correspondent

KOLLAM: The Kottarakara Convention 2006 of the Malankara Orthodox Church will be held at Christian Centre, Kottarakara, from January 22 to 29. KOLLAM: The next telecom adalat of Kollam Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) will be held during the second week of February.
