Three killed in quarry blast

THRISSUR: Three persons were killed in a blast in a quarry at Kodassery, near Kiraloor, in the district on Friday. The tragedy occurred when the electric detonators, kept in the quarry for rock blasting, accidentally caught fire in lightning at about 5.45 p.m. The police said the deceased had been identified as Subramanian (40) of Thayyur Vellattanjur, Kottilingal Sasi of Velur (42) and Puthenpurakkal Sibi (25) of Kothamangalam. Senior police officials have rushed to the spot. The Explosive Department officials said they would launch a probe into the blast as soon as they got a report from the police on the incident.

Devaswom administrator

THRISSUR: Thrissur District Collector M. Beena on Friday took charge as the administrator of the Guruvayur Devaswom replacing K. Anilkumar. Mr. Anilkumar had been directed by the Government to hand over charge to the Collector on October 16, when his tenure was over. However, Mr Anilkumar filed a petition against the Government Order. The High Court stayed the Government order till October 20. The Collector took charge following the completion of the stay period. Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) laid siege to the branches of Centurion Bank of Punjab across the State on Friday demanding that the move to merge Lord Krishna Bank with the new generation bank be abandoned. Thiruvananthapuram: Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) president K. Muraleedharan said here on Friday that Sharad Pawar and K. Karunakaran would decide on whether the new-look Nationalist Congress Party should continue in the Left coalition after the merger. Presiding over the re-release of the party magazine `Chethana,' Mr. Muraleedharan ruled out the question of any kind of alliance with the UDF and the Congress.

Pannian's message to Lalu Prasad

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI leader Pannian Ravindran, MP, on Friday sent an urgent message to Railway Minister Lalu Prasad urging him to reconsider the decision to discontinue long distance trains between Kerala and Delhi such as the Millenium and Suvarna Jayanthi express trains. He pointed out that there was a heavy rush of passengers from Kerala to Delhi and back and that these trains were sanctioned after intense pressure and a long wait. Burglary bid at police station: youth held

PATHANAMTHITTA: The police have arrested a youth from Ranni in connection with the burglary attempt at the Pathanamthitta police station on Monday. The police identified the accused as Vinodkumar alias Ullas, 26, of Pappattuthara, Edasseribhagom in Aranmula.
