KOLLAM: P. Rajendran, MP, has said the Union Government has in principle recognised Kollam district as a `growth pole for traditional industries.'

At a press conference here on Thursday, he said that when the recognition became formal, Kollam would be entitled for handsome financial allocations directly from the Centre for the development of traditional industries. When the concept had come up for consideration in the Prime Minister's Office, he had submitted all necessary data on the traditional cashew, fisheries, coir and dairy industries in the district there. Mr. Rajendran said the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways had decided to include the construction of the third and fourth phases of the Kollam bypass in Phase III of the National Highway Development Programme.

The project report prepared by the National Highway Development Authority of India had been given recognition by the Ministry. The administrative sanction for the project would be obtained soon.

The hurdles to the flyover at SP Office Junction level crossing were being removed. The Government was taking steps to construct the approach road, he said.
