KOCHI: The two characters that Gopi played in films ‘Kodiyettam’ and ‘Yavanika’ were enough to gauge his calibre as an actor. The characters Sankarankutty and Ayyappan are milestones in the history of Malayalam film history, said Jose Thettayil, Minister for Transport.
He was delivering the commemorative lecture on actor Gopi as part of the release of the book ‘Adayalanakshatramayi Gopi’ written by John Paul at the 13th Kochi International Book Festival here on Tuesday. Even before attaining fame as film actor, Bharat Gopi was known among film buffs as one of the earliest activists of the film society movement and also as a theatre personality, he said.
In his presidential address, K.G. George, renowned filmmaker and chairman of Kerala State Film Development Corporation, said that the actor could give a rich oeuvre of characters to Malayalam films even while retaining same physical appearance.
Introducing the book, former Vice Chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit K.S. Radhakrishnan said that John Paul could record the mindscape of Gopi as a fellow traveller. Literary critic M.K. Sanoo released the book by handing over the first copy to Mr. George.
