The body of a student was found in the Andhakaranazhi estuary (pozhi) near Cherthala two days after he was reported missing from his home in Pattanakad here.

According to the police, Arun Mathew, 18, was reported missing from his home on Sunday. He was seen by his parents in his room, studying till about 11.30 p.m. on Saturday. However, when they went to his room the next day morning to wake him up, Arun was not to be seen, following which the parents lodged a complaint with the Pattanakad police.

On Wednesday morning, fishermen who were returning from the sea noticed the body in the Andhakaranazhi estuary, a semi-enclosed water-body opening into the sea, near the Andhakaranazhi beach. The body had a bag around its neck, and the bag was filled with heavy concrete stones, police said.

With injuries being noticed on the head and face as well, police suspect the boy could have been murdered. A case has been registered and an investigation is on.

Arun, a first year degree student of the Sree Narayana College, Cherthala, is survived by his father T.J. Mathew, mother Molly and two sisters.
