A march staged by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers to the site of the proposed KGS Aranmula International Airport Ltd. at Aranmula took a violent turn following police action against them when a group of protesters tried to barge into the project office on Saturday.

Nine persons were injured in the incident. The protesters took out a march to the illegally converted portion of Aranmula puncha (paddy fields) in the forenoon. The protesters demolished a temporary shed at the project site. The BJYM workers, led by the State president V.V. Rajesh, then took out a march to the project office of the private company at Aranmula Iykara junction. The protesters staged a sit-in in front of the company’s office, blocking the Chengannur-Kozhencherry road.

The situation took a violent turn when a group of BJYM workers tried to barge into the company’s office.

Nine persons, including Sudheer, BJYM State secretary; P. Unnikrishnan, district secretary; Renjit Sivapuram, vice-president; Vinodkumar, Sub-Inspector of Police and Sasidharan, ASI; E. Nizamudeen, and Rikson, civil police officers, were injured.

The police took 11 BJP-BJYM activists into custody.
