The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday erected a statue of Shakthan Thampuran in the city in a symbolic protest against the alleged failure of civic authorities to set up a memorial for him.
Participating in the function, Mayor I. P. Paul said the Corporation would take steps to put up a statue of Shakthan Thampuran in the city.
BJP district president B. Gopalakrishnan said that existing memorials for Shakthan Thampuran, including roads and buildings named after him, should be preserved. “The statue put up by the BJP is an abstract work,” he said.
Among those present on the occasion were Vicar General Francis Alappatt, Thiruvambady Devaswom president M. Madhavankutty, Paramekkavu Devaswom president K.K. Menon, RSS Sanghchalak G. Mahadevan, former BJP State president K.V. Sreedaran and former party district president P.A. Sreeraman.
