KOCHI: “High-tech satellite-guided fishing with a mother vessel concept that will eradicate unemployment will be introduced in Lakshadweep, if I am elected from the constituency,” K.P. Muthu Koya, candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the island, said here on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Koya, who is also the State president of the party, said that Lakshadweep has got nearly five lakh square miles of exclusive economic zone that is very rich in marine health. The government of the day has failed to tap even three per cent of the rich marine wealth. Mr. Koya said that the people of Lakshadweep were totally dependent on the Central government for its existence. He accused the Congress of having ruined the society by making them dependent on the government.

Referring to the tourism potential of the region, Mr. Koya said high end low volume tourism in the model of the Maldives will be developed with special focus on eco-tourism and scuba diving. The policy of leasing out facilities to mainlanders will be stopped and a tourism policy will be formed to directly benefit the local Scheduled Tribes.
