Absconding rape case convict Bitti Mohanty, who claims to be Raghav Rajan and is in judicial custody here, was brought back to the Sub Jail here on Monday, three days after he was handed over to the police by jail authorities to take him to Jaipur in Rajasthan.

Sub Jail Superintendent K.V. Jagadeesh said the personnel of the Armed Reserve police here produced Bitti at the jail at 12.10 p.m. on Monday. The four AR personnel, taking Bitti to Jaipur, had left for Rajasthan by train on December 6 after the jail authorities handed him over to the police for his production in a court there.

They cut short the journey midway when Mr. Jagadeesh directed the personnel to bring him back in view of a High Court order that he should be lodged at the jail till December 10.

The decision of the jail authorities to hand over Bitti to the police to take him to Jaipur had been questioned by Bitti’s counsel in the High Court. He had alleged that the bid to transfer Bitti/Raghav Rajan was against the High Court order on Friday. Bitti, who was facing charges of jumping parole in Rajasthan, had been arrested here in March while working as a probationary officer in a public sector bank under his alleged fake name.

Directive to SP

Special Correspondent writes from Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Monday directed the Superintendent of the Kannur Special Sub Jail to file an affidavit explaining the circumstances under which Bitti was taken to Rajasthan despite a stay against transferring him to any other jail.
