Thrissur: Kayaks and canoes on Sunday glided across the Puzhakkal river under a grey monsoon sky in a show organised by the Thrissur District Canoeing-Kayaking Association as part of an eco-tourism project.
Members of the Indian team, currently training on the Punnamada lake, participated in exhibition contests in kayaking and canoeing (singles and doubles).
The contests were held in the 200 metre and 500 metre categories for men and women to popualise kayaking and canoeing in the district.
Kayaking is differentiated from canoeing by the position in which the paddler sits and the number of blades of the paddle.
A kayak, according to the International Canoe Federation, is a boat where the paddler faces forward, with his legs in front, and uses a double-bladed paddle. A canoe is a boat in which the paddler faces forward, kneels on it and uses a single-bladed paddle. Mayor R. Bindu, Collector V. K. Baby, Anik Akkara, president, Adattu Grama Panchayat and members of the Thrissur District Canoeing-Kayaking Association were present on the occasion.
