KOCHI: The Kothamangalam Pollution Control Club based at Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam, has received the Bhoomimitra award instituted by the Aluva-based Paristhithi Samrakshana Sangham for its outstanding contributions for environment protection here on Friday.

The award consisted of a purse of Rs. 5,000 and a plaque. Winny Varghese, principal of Mar Athanasius College, received the award from Sethu, noted writer, at a function held at Municipal Town Hall, Aluva. The club was selected for the award based on its programmes for protection of the environment. Nearly 30 schools in the Kothamangalam region are affiliated to the club, according to the award jury.

Some of the activities organised by the club include solid waste management programmes and removal of plastic waste piled up in Kothamangalam.

The greens were also involved in setting up a road using tar made from plastic waste. — Staff Reporter
