: Principal Consultant of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Kochi Metro E.S. Sreedharan said here on Sunday that the pitiable condition of roads in Kerala was owing to the “lack of social responsibility and technical competence of engineers who are implementing these projects.”

Mr. Sreedharan who was the Chief Guest at the ‘Engineers’ Day’, organised by The Institution of Engineers (India), Palghat Local Chapter here, was delivering the keynote address on ‘Frugal Engineering – achieving more with fewer resources.’

He said punctuality, integrity, professional competence, social responsibility, and accountability were the most important pillars of the engineering profession, to command recognition and respect in the public domain.

“Two stellar examples were the completion of the Konkan Railway and Delhi Metro, before the stipulated time and estimated cost. Though Delhi Metro second phase would be completed in five years, the network had been executed in about 140 km, within a record time of four-and-a-half years, without complaints of corruption, misappropriation, or malpractices.

He said “even in a governmental set-up, under the watchful eyes of the CAG and CVC, these projects had been completed in record time.”
