Union Minister of State for Power K.C. Venugopal said the various government departments should work together with alertness to face natural disasters in the district.

The Minister was chairing the meeting on natural disaster redressal here on Saturday. Steps to face situations arising out of natural disasters should be planned in advance. Government departments should be prepared to face urgent issues. A joint project should be prepared by Revenue and Irrigation Departments for relief activities connected with sea erosion. KSEB should be careful in not creating a situation where power supply will be disrupted for hours together. The health department should take steps to control communicable diseases. The Minister also gave instructions to speed up renovation works on the national highway. Representatives G. Sudhakaran, MLA, and Thomas Chandy, MLA, attended the meeting.

District collector P. Venugopal told officials of the Fisheries Department that a list of mobile phone numbers of fishermen should be prepared to send them an SMS in case of an emergency.

Super chlorination process will be conducted in view of the heavy rains, he said.

Irrigation Department executive engineer R. Venugopal told the meeting that shutters of Thottappally spillway and Thaneermukkom barrage have been opened and if 113 cms of rain was received, steps will be taken to break open the Thottappally breakwater.

District police chief K.G. James said that two interceptor boats at the coastal police station in the district were in working condition. Chairpersons of Alappuzha, Chertala and Chengannur municipalities, Mercy Diana Macido, Jayalekshmi Anilkumar and Suja John; Additional Divisional Magistrate (ADM) K.P. Thampy; Revenue Divisional Officer (RDOs) of Alappuzha and Chengannur, Antony Dominic and Noorudheen also attended the meeting.
