The funeral rites of S. Balaraman, former acting chairman of the State Human Rights Commission, who passed away on Monday, was performed at the Polayathodu public crematorium on Tuesday evening.

The funeral pyre was lit by his grandson Rohan Basant.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of people arrived at his house at Amrithakulam in the city to pay their last respects. Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan arrived at noon and consoled the bereaved family.

Among other who paid their last respects were KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala; CPI State secretary Pannian Ravindran; LDF convener Vaikom Viswan; Mayor Prasanna Earnest; District Panchayat President S. Jayamohan; and N. Peethambara Kurup, M.I. Shanavas and K.N. Balagopal, MPs.
