It is a declared mission of the Palakkad Kathakali Trust to give equal opportunity to ‘the young, the not-so-young, and the seniors’.
Last month, ‘the young’ had the opportunity to excel in the ‘Keechaka Vadham’ performance.
This month, it was ‘the not-so-young’ Kalamandalam Bhagyanath from Kudamaloor who had the stage to perform the lead role of Bheema in ‘Baka Vadham.’
Starting from ‘Bheema requesting his mother Kunthi to tell him what to do to help the distraught Brahmana’ to ‘Bheema fighting Bakasura and finishing him off to the relief of the Brahmana’ the skit was very brief. But it was highly power- packed, remarked K.R. Nedungadi, a founder-trustee of Palakkad Kathakali Trust.
Entry of Kalamandalam Udayakumar as Baka was quite electrifying. Kalamandalam Balasunder and Kalamandalam Srihari on the Chenda and Kalamandalam Narayanan and Kalamandalam Sudhesh on the Maddalam gave ample support. Kalamandalam Mohanakrishna Varrier as the Brahmana and Kalamandalam Yashwanth as Kunthi did justice to their roles, Mr. Nedungadi said.
