Awards in various categories instituted by Kalasagar, a cultural organisation, in memory of chenda maestro Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval, were presented at a function held at the Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University for Art and Culture at Cheruthuruthy on Tuesday.
Writer Sreekumaran Thampi inaugurated the function, held as part of the 89th birth anniversary celebrations of the chenda maestro.
Kalamandalam Vice-Chancellor P. N. Suresh presided.
Playback singer P. Jayachandran, Kathakali maestro Kalamandalam Gopi, Vasanthi Menon, daughter of Vallathol Narayana Menon, scholars K. P. C. Narayanan Bhattathiripad, Thekkedath Raman Bhattathiripad, and writers K. B. Raj Anand, N. P. Vijayakrishnan and V. Kaladharan spoke.
The awards were received by Kalamandalam Sreekumar (Vesham); Kottakkal Madhu (vocals); Kalamandalam Krishnadas (Chenda): Kalamandalam Narayanan Nambeesan (Maddalam); Kottakkal Balakrishnan (Chutty); Kalamandalam Mohanakrishnan (Ottanthullal); Painkulam Narayana Chakyar (Chakyarkoothu); Margi Madhu (Koodiyattom); Kalamandalam Leelamma (Mohiniyattom); Kalamandalam Sujatha (Bharathanatyam); Porur Unnikrishnan (Thayambaka); Kongad Madhu (Thimila); Pulapatta Thankamani (Maddalam); Kakkatur Appuklutta Marar (Edakka); Panjal Velukutty (Thalam); and Machad Unni Nair (Kombu).
Ashtapadiyattom and the Kathakali play, ‘Kirmeera Vadhom’, were staged at the function as a tribute to Krishnankutty Poduval.
