S. Shobhanakumari, president, Vilappilsala grama panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram district, has been selected for the first Dr. Sukumar Azhikode award for social intervention of the Kozhikode-based Vagbhadananda Trust. Trust chairman and writer M. Mukundan told reporters here on Friday that the award carried a purse of Rs.25,000, a statue, and citation.

The award would be given away at a function to mark the first death anniversary of Sukumar Azhikode at the Kozhikode Town Hall at 5.30 p.m. on January 24.

Ms. Shobhana Kumari shot to fame after she organised housewives in her panchayat against the waste treatment plant of the Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation, Mr. Mukundan said.
