Thiruvananthapuram: Painter, teacher and writer-scholar Gulam Mohammed Sheikh has been selected for the Raja Ravi Varma Puraskaram-2008.

Minister for Culture M.A. Baby said Prof. Sheikh who was a teacher at M.S. University, Baroda, for three decades had made significant contributions to the growth and development of Indian painting. He had curated several exhibitions. He had many disciples in the State.

Prof. Sheikh was born in Surendranagar in Gujarat in 1937.

The award consists of a purse of Rs.1.25 lakh and a specially designed statuette.

Prof. Sheikh’s name was recommended for the award by a committee chaired by artist S.G. Vasudev and comprising C.N. Karunakaran, N.N. Rimzon, Anila Jacob, Sadanand Menon, Sathayapal and V. Venu.
