KOCHI: Daya Bai of Barul, Chindwara district, who has been working for the welfare of the Gounda tribe, was awarded the Vanitha Woman of the Year at a function here on Monday. Kiran Bedi, former IPS officer, presented the award.

In an inspiring speech, Daya Bai, originally Mercy Mathew from Pala, spoke about the trials and tribulations in her search for the purpose of life and how she happened to reach a place where she could help the people.

Ms. Bedi, in her keynote address, said with a purpose in life and a sense of giving, life will become richer. She called upon women from all walks of life to form a network, which will enable them to help one another.
