The National Highway stretch in front of the Press Club maidan here has been in a deplorable condition for the past one month and the authorities do not seem to care. Gaping potholes on the Chinnakada overbridge pose grave danger to two-wheeler riders, especially those riding pillion. Traffic remains choked in the Chinnakada area most of the time.
But on Saturday morning, a group of autorickshaw drivers finally decided to act. They transported soft rubble in their vehicles and began resurfacing the road.
The traffic police at duty were quick to extend support by regulating traffic while the work was on. It indeed provided some relief to motorists, yet is only a stopgap. The filling remained intact since it did not rain on Saturday. When it starts raining, the potholes will get exposed again.
Two weeks ago, City Police Commissioner Debesh Kumar Behera had called up the National Highway Authority of India officials, asking them to take steps for repairing the road that witnesses heavy traffic all through the day. But no steps had been taken.
