Kozhikode: The police arrested two persons in connection with the attack on a police team in the Elathur police station limits on the outskirts of the city on Friday.
The police arrested Sreekumar, 30, and Mahesh, 22. They were charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Destruction of Public Property (PDPP) Act. They were produced before the Koyilandy Judicial First Class Magistrate and remanded in judicial custody for two weeks.
Cases were registered against nearly 50 identifiable people in connection with the violent incidents at Puthiyandi. Four police personnel, including a Sub-Inspector, sustained injuries. The local people attacked the police personnel alleging that they were drunk while on duty. Liquor bottles and glasses were found inside the police vehicle, they said.
More than 150 people gathered at the local junction and demanded that the police personnel be booked for drunken behaviour. Assistant Commissioner of Police K.R. Premachandran arrived at the scene to control the situation. The police team was subjected to medical examination at Government General Hospital. No trace of alcohol was found in the police personnel.
The police said the liquor bottles and glasses found inside their vehicle were seized from a group of persons consuming alcohol at a public place. Most of the accused had fled the area after the police registered cases against them. They were charged with Section 143; 147; 148; 341; 332; 353; 294-B; 225-B read with 149 of the IPC; and Section 3 of the PDPP Act.
