KOZHIKODE: An astronomy gallery will be opened at the Regional Science Centre (RSC) and Planetarium here in October.
The gallery is coming up on 4,100 sq ft in the new block of the RSC with a funding of Rs.50 lakh. There are 38 working models and statues of astronomers in the gallery. The gallery was set up as part of the declaration of 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy by the United Nations.
The gallery has four sections: pre-telescopic era, post telescopic era, earth and moon and, ‘in search of cosmic truth’. Statues of astronomers including Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei, Indian astronomer Aryabhatta and others will be displayed at the gallery.
The RSC will be recreating the same telescope that Galileo Galilei had used in his time.
Different types of telescopes will be displayed at the gallery, said V.S. Ramachandran, project coordinator, Regional Science Centre and Planetarium, Kozhikode. Visitors can press the button on the telescopes to get the stimulated images of the celestial objects.
Display radio and optic telescopes will be on display too.
A ‘moon photo spot’, with a 3D replica of an astronaut, where the visitors can take a photo using a camera installed there will be another highlight.
The exhibit is titled ‘Be an astronaut’.
