The Kollam District Paristhithi Samrakshana Ekopana Samithi is organising a convention here on January 9 to create awareness on the protection of the Ashtamudi Lake which is a Ramsar site.

The convention to be inaugurated by Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan, will be held on the banks of Ashtamudi Lake near KSRTC bus station here.

The organisers said the Ashtamudi Lake is on the verge of an environmental disaster due to various factors, including different kinds of pollution, illegal sand-mining, and massive encroachments.

The convention will discuss the environmental threats to the lake in detail and work out plans for building up a mass movement that can put pressure on the authorities concerned to take action.

Organising committee

Representatives of the people from 13 panchayats and Kollam City Corporation wards on the banks of the lake will participate in the convention along with environmental scientists, fisheries sector experts, and social and cultural activists.

A meeting to constitute an organising committee of the convention will be held at 4 p.m. on December 15 at the Public Library hall. Former MLA J. Mercykutty will inaugurate the meeting.
