The Artist Rama Varma Raja Trust, instituted in memory of Rama Varma Raja, the son of legendary painter, Raja Ravi Varma, will be awarding scholarships to six students of Raja Ravi Varma College of Fine Arts, Mavelikara on the occasion of 133rd birthday of Rama Varma here on September 29.

R. Rajesh, MLA, will be inaugurating the trust activities and distributing the scholarships on the occasion. This was stated by the Trust secretary, K. R. Prasad and member K. V. Prasad at a press conference here on Wednesday. Municipal chairman, K. R. Muralidharan will unveil the new nameboard of the College library which has now being renamed as Artist Rama Varma Raja Multi Media library, as per a State government's decision.

It was Artist Rama Varma Raja who started a painting school in 1915, named Raja Ravi Varma School of Painting, which is now the College of Fine Arts. Several noted painters including cartoonist Sanker, P. J. Cherian, Abu Abraham, C. V. Balan Nair, C. K. Ramakrishnan Nair and C. L. Porinchukutty had been students of this school of painting.

Artist Rama Varma Raja was a nominated member of the Travancore Legislative Council and was the first chairman of Kerala Lalithakala Akademy.
