The 25th district meet of Kerala Police Association (KPA) began here with a cultural congregation here on Saturday.

Writer Perumbadavom Sreedharan inaugurated the cultural meet held at the Shine Tower auditorium.

Inaugurating the meet, Mr. Sreedharan expressed serious concern over the erosion of values in all walks of life. According to him, erosion of cultural and social values has been leading to an unprecedented spurt in crime rate.

He said sidelining of Malayalam has been causing some sort of a degenerating effect on Malayalam language. “The richness of the language is on the wane owing to the mad rush after western culture in modern times. We are witnessing an attitudinal change in the young generation that has switched from a ‘smoking culture' to a culture of alcoholism which is disastrous to society,” Mr. Sreedharan said.

The writer said cultural leaders had to play a key role in the campaign against social evils. Cultural meetings would help people realise the importance of art and literature in refining and reforming society, he added.

K.K. Balachandran, District Superintendent of Police; R. Reghuvaran Nair, Dy.SP, V. Shaji, association State president; and K.S. Aji, district secretary, also addressed the inaugural meet. G. Jayachandran, KPA district president, presided over the function.

A poets' meet was held as part of the cultural meet. Kadammanitta Vasudevan Pillai, Murukan Kattakkada, Konniyoor Radhakrishnan, Kattoor Harikumar, and P. Krishnakumar presented poems.

Mr. Balachandran will inaugurate a delegates' meet to be held on Sunday. Mr. Jayachandran will preside over the meet.

R. Chandrashekhara Pillai, Dy.SP; P.K. Anilkumar, Assistant Commandant of Police; and C.T. Baburaj and K.N. Mohanbabu, KPA office-bearers, will also address the meet.

K. Sivadasan Nair, MLA, will inaugurate a district leadership meet in the afternoon. The SP will deliver the keynote address and K.J. Francis, founder-secretary of the association, will be the guest of honour on the occasion.
