Birthday of Archbishops' celebrated in Thrissur

The Thrissur Archbishop's House on Sunday played host to celebrations to mark the 60th birthday of Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath and 80th birthday of Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy.

People from all walks of life, including ministers, political and cultural leaders, representatives of various religious organisations, gathered to wish the archbishops.

Addressing the function, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that the Catholic Church had played a key role in making Kerala highly literate.

The minister noted that Church had contributed in a big way to the empowerment of backward communities in Kerala through universal educational programmes, social works and healthcare activities.

He appreciated the Thrissur Archdiocese' s interventions in providing quality education.

“The Church and political parties can cooperate in many areas towards the progress of the State, such as healthcare, environmental protection and sanitation,“ the minister added.

Speaker K. Radhakrishnan, Union Minister of State for Agriculture K.V. Thomas and Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy extended their birthday greetings to Mar Andrews Thazhath and Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy.

Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, the Director General of Police Sibi Mathews and Cochin Devaswom Board President M. C. S. Menon and bishops of various dioceses attended the function.

Thrissur Corporation Mayor I. P. Paul and councillors presented mementos to the archbishops. Hundreds of faithful greeted them and presented their contributions to the housing scheme for the poor, as part of the birthday celebrations.

The function was attended by leaders of various religious organisations.

A caparisoned elephant of Thiruvambadi Devaswom welcomed the guests at the entrance of the venue of the celebrations.

A Holy Qurbana followed the meeting.

Earlier in the day, Mar Andrews Thazhath and Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy attended a function at Ramavarmapuram Old Age Home organised by Catholic Union-KCYM as part of the birthday celebrations.
