The 1,111th stage show of ‘Varayarangu,' a novel experiment by cartoonist S. Jithesh, was held at Town Hall here on Sunday afternoon.

The programme was organised by the Kerala Animation Academy, the Viswadarsanam and the Sahithi Samvadavedi. Benyamin, novelist, inaugurated the show.

‘Varayarangu' is an experiment that presents caricature as a stage art. Jitesh, a lawyer by profession, blends poetry, anecdotes and socio-political satires with his ‘super-speedy' drawings during the show.

The success of the show lies in Jithesh's ability to draws faces of 50 celebrities in just five minutes.

His speed has been attracting audiences and his jokes and comments lend colour to the show, says Benyamin.

Jithesh's caricatures are so clear that even a child can identify the personalities portrayed. A caricature of Nehru within four seconds, that of Rabindranath Tagore within 10 seconds, of actor Mohanlal in minimal lines, of Michael Jackson in a jiffy and of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan in 10 seconds — Jithesh's fingers seem to flow once the show begins.

Jithesh launched the programme as a tribute to his teacher, artist V.S. Vallyathan, by drawing 50 celebrity faces within five minutes at a commemoration of Vallyathan at Pandalam on June 22, 2008. Vinod Elakolloor, president of the Sahithi Samvadavedi, presided over the inaugural function.
