Thrissur: Two persons, on Sunday, attacked the security wing of the Nitta Gelatin India Limited (NGIL) at Kathikudam, an ossein-producing company that has been facing allegations of environmental pollution.

According to T. Vijayakrishnan, assistant general manager of the company, the attackers arrived on a motorcycle around 1 a.m., attacked the security office with iron bars and smashed windowpanes before speeding away.

“They left behind a few posters which carried slogans like ‘Move over NGIL,' ‘Maoist Zindabad,' 'Maoist Kerala Unit' and ‘Clean Up Kathikudam.' One attacker wore a helmet and the other covered his face with cloth,” Mr. Vijayakrishnan said. The police examined the place.

The company has lodged complaints with the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Office of the Chalakudy Circle Inspector, vigilance wing and the Koratty police station. The Koratty police also received a complaint from the Nitta Gelatin India Action Council, which stated that the company was misleading the public by accusing that council activists were involved in the incident. The council has been agitating against alleged disposal of untreated effluents from NGIL into the Chalakudy River.
