Thrissur: Cultural Affairs Minister M.A. Baby inaugurated the 54th anniversary celebrations of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and presented the Akademi awards and fellowships for 2009 at a meeting here on Saturday.

Addressing the meeting, Mr. Baby said that the main task of the government and cultural academies in promotion of art and culture was to refrain from unnecessary intervention that would stall the natural growth of the disciplines. “The Culture Department and various academies should play the role of a catalyst,” he said.

The Akademi's fellowships were received by Vishnunarayanan Namboodiri and Punathil Kunjabdullah, and lifetime achievement awards by Ettumanur Somadasan, Erumeli Parameswaran Pillai and P.V.K. Panayal.
