ALAPPUZHA: Three persons were killed in two separate accidents in Alappuzha district on Wednesday.

Two persons were killed and two seriously injured when the car they were travelling in rammed a lorry from behind near the Cherthala railway station on the National Highway-47 here early on Wednesday morning.

According to the Cherthala police, the deceased were identified as K.V.S. Pillai, 66, of Chengannur, and his driver Kurian Varghese, 46, of Tiruvalla.

Mr. Pillai's wife, Komalam S. Pillai, 60, and Viswambhara Panicker, 69, a family friend, were admitted to a private hospital in Cherthala with serious injuries. The accident occurred around 1.30 a.m. when Mr. Pillai and the others were returning to Tiruvalla after seeing off his son Manoj Pillai at the Nedumbassery airport. The car they were travelling in rammed the lorry from behind.

The lorry sped away immediately after the accident. Fire and Rescue personnel from Cherthala had to cut open the car to extricate the bodies and the injured persons.

Formerly with the Defence Services, Mr. Pillai and his family had reached the State only three weeks ago and were looking to purchase a house near the Chettikulangara temple. He has a daughter, Mini S. Kurup, while Kurian Varghese, the driver, is survived by his wife Sally and two daughters.

Hit by tipper

In another accident, a woman was killed near the busy Collectorate Junction here when a speeding tipper lorry hit from behind the two-wheeler on which she was travelling.

According to the police, Revamma, 55, the wife of Siddarthan of Aryad, was on her way to a wedding with her husband when the accident occurred.

The tipper lorry hit the two-wheeler from behind when the couple was taking a right turn from the Collectorate Junction towards the Medical College Junction around 6 p.m.

Revamma was killed on the spot while Siddarthan sustained a few injuries.

Siddarthan is the Aryad panchayat development standing committee chairman.

Revamma is survived by her husband and two children, Anish and Asha.

The tipper lorry was taken into custody and the driver has been arrested.
