Thrissur: Monsignor Raphael Thattil was consecrated auxiliary bishop of the Thrissur Archdiocese by Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath at a well-attended ceremony at the Lourde's Metropolitan Cathedral here on Saturday.

Archbishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy and Bishop Jacob Manathodath were the co-celebrants of the ceremony, which was attended by more than 40 bishops from across the country. The ceremonies began with the bishop-designate paying tributes to the holy relics of St. Thomas brought from St. Thomas shrine, Palayur.

An appointment letter sent by Major Archbishop Varkey Vithayathil declaring Monsignor Raphael Thattil as auxiliary bishop of the Thrissur Archdiocese was read at the function. The bishop-designate was made to wear the Crosier (ceremonial stick) and Mitre (ceremonial hat) by Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath at the end of ceremonial rites. Major Archbishop of the Syro Malankara Church Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos addressed the function. Representative of the Embassy of Vatican read the message of Pope Benedict XVI.

Archbishop of the Assyrian Church of the East Mar Aprem; Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi; P.C. Chacko, MP; Therambil Ramakrishnan and C. Raveendranath, MLAs; and Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran were among those who attended the function.

In connection with Episcopal ordination of Bishop Thattil, houses will be constructed for 25 financially-backward families in the district.
