Special services held in churches in Kollam, Pathanamthitta

KOLLAM: Special services were held in churches and processions were taken out in Kollam as part of Palm Sunday observance.

Holding coconut palm fronds, the faithful participated in the traditional Palm Sunday processions in the morning to commemorate the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover.

Palm Sunday, which is the last Sunday of Lent, also marks the commencement of the holy week leading to Easter. Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman celebrated the Palm Sunday high mass at the Kannanallur parish church and at the Tangasseri Infant Jesus Cathedral. Parish priest George Rebeiro was the chief celebrant.

All churches in the district wore a festive look. The palm fronds were distributed to the faithful at the church. These were then blessed by the priest before the procession. Each church organised its own procession which was led by the chief celebrant of the holy mass. The mass was celebrated after the procession.

The palm fronds are then taken home by the faithful to be religiously preserved till the Ash Wednesday. Many craft them into crosses. The holy week rituals start from Thursday, called Maundy Thursday, when the washing of the feet ritual will be held.

Good Friday follows marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The Way of the Cross ritual will be in the evening on that day. Easter mass to observe the resurrection of Jesus Christ is held at midnight on Saturday and Easter is observed on Sunday.
