Kozhikode: Author M.T. Vasudevan Nair and leading architects, who have designed many landmarks in the city landscape, will participate in a mass protest on Thursday against the reported move to set up a wastewater treatment plant near the Sarovaram Bio Park under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project.

The demonstration is being organised by an action committee consisting of representatives of residents' associations in the neighbourhood of the proposed treatment plant which, it is feared, will pollute Canoly Canal and the bio park.

Mr. Vasudevan Nair would inaugurate the meeting.

R.K. Ramesh, N.M. Saleem and Prasanth, architects who have designed many eye-catching structures in the city, will also join the show of protest, Manjeri Sunderaj, coordinator of the action committee, said on Monday. Environmental activists A. Achyuthan and Sobheendran will speak.

Into the canal

Wastewater from different parts of the city, including the beach, will be treatment at the plant. The treated water will be released into Canoly Canal.

The coordination committee warned that releasing water into the canal would cause floods and large-scale pollution and alleged that the proposal was being pushed through without a proper public debate and studying its environmental impact.
