KOCHI: Chief Minister V.S. Achutanandan will lay the foundation stone for the new campus of the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) at Kalamassery on Saturday.

The new campus is coming up at the 10-acre allotted by the State Government at the Kinfra Hi-Tech Park, Kalamassery. Minister for Education and Pro-Chancellor of the University M.A. Baby will deliver the keynote address. Chief Justice of Kerala and Chancellor of NUALS will preside. N.K. Jayakumar, Vice Chancellor of NUALS, said here that the university is on the process of expansion. Discussions are on with at least 10 international universities for academic collaboration and have got positive responses from most of them. Procedures for faculty and student exchanges as well as joint researches are on with Macquarie University, Sydney; Basel University, Switzerland; Ghent University, Belgium and La Trobe University, Melbourne, Dr. Jayakumar said.

The university is also planning to launch two research centres this academic year—the Centre for Law and Development and the Centre for Law and Agriculture. These centres will do socially-relevant research and contribute to policy making and law making. Financial support from the Union Ministry of Law and Agriculture as well as State government is expected, he said.
