THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has tied up with Faith Infotech Academy — a Technopark-based service provider in education and training — to offer a 16-week certificate course in telecom engineering.

The Telecom Career Programme is for fresh engineering graduates seeking employment in the telecom sector. The course would be a combination of core telecom skills and soft skills and would make a candidate industry-ready, representatives of Faith Infotech and BSNL said at a press conference here on Monday.

BSNL General Manager (Development) George Mathai said the telecom industry is facing a severe shortage of skilled professionals who can design, roll out and maintain networks. The Regional Telecom Training Centre (RTTC) is equipped with state-of-the art equipment and is manned by talented engineers, he added.

Around 20,000 telecom engineers would be needed by the industry which is gearing up to roll out 3G services, Faith Infotech CEO Saji Joseph said. The joint certification programme seeks to answer a part of this demand. Engineers of the BSNL would handle the core telecom modules on 3G, Wimax, broadband, VPN, GSM and CDMA systems, transmission technologies and data communication and networking. The training programme would be held at the RTTC at Kaimanam here.

Faith Infotech is already talking to telecom companies for possible placement of candidates who successfully complete the training programme. Jobs are available with telecom service providers, telecom equipment manufacturers, managed service providers, in telecom infrastructure installation, maintenance and support providers, value-added service providers and IT companies. Candidates with a B.E. or B.Tech. degree in electronics, electrical and computer science with 60 per cent marks can apply. Applicants have to clear an aptitude test and an interview.
