KOTTAYAM: Sunny George, a small farmer from Choorappadavu, near Cherupuzha, in Kannur district, has been selected for the biennial Karshakasree Award.

The award for the best farmer, instituted by Malayala Manorama carries a purse of Rs.2 lakh, a gold medallion and a citation.

The award was declared by Malayala Manorama executive editor Jacob Mathew and editor-in-charge R.T. Ravi Varma.

They said the judging committee headed by M.S. Swaminathan had appreciated the innovative efforts and ingenuity of Sunny George, originally a farm labourer, in turning a barren stretch of land into a successful farm. As many as 101 entries were received and Sunny George is the tenth recipient of the award.
