Thousands thronged the Thrikkakara temple on Thiruvonam day as this year's Onam celebrations reached its peak.

The temple ceremonies and rituals began in the early hours of the day and a ritual welcome was accorded to Mahabali at 7 a.m.

The highlight of the day's celebrations was the traditional ‘Onasadya,' a ritual lunch in which around 8,000 people participated.

The lunch was served at the Thiruvonam hall from 10.30 a.m. and continued till about 3 p.m. A performance of ‘Chaakyarkoothu' by Edanad Rajan Nambiar and ‘Ottamthullal' by Kongatt Achutha Pisharadi were the other highlights of the day's celebrations.

K. Babu, MLA, and District Collector M. Beena were among the VIPs who visited the temple during the day.

The Thiruvonam day celebrations mark the culmination of the festivities that began on August 14.

The Thrikkakara temple is considered to be the seat of Onam celebrations. The Vishnu temple here is the only one of its kind to have Vamana (one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu) as the deity.
