Statements of police officers, devotees recorded
As part of the probe into the Satnam Singh custodial death case, Inspector General of Police (Crime Branch) B. Sandhya visited the Mata Amritanandamayi Ashram at Amritapuri near here and the district jail here on Wednesday.
Singh who was declared dead-on-arrival at the Thiruvananthpauram Medical College Hospital (MCH) on August 4 was arrested by the Karunagapally police from the ashram on August 1 on charges of attempting to attack Mata Amritanandamayi. A case of attempt to murder was registered against him.
Since he showed signs of being mentally challenged he was admitted to the State Mental Health Centre (MHC) Thiruvananthapuram after being remanded to the district jail here by a magistrate court at Karunagapally. It was from the MHC that he was taken to the MCH.
At Amritapuri, Ms. Sandhya met the vice-chairman of the ashram Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri and collected details of the developments there on August 1 when Singh allegedly ran to the dais where Mata Amritanandamayi was seated.
Ms. Sandhya recorded statements of police personnel who were on security duty that day. The statements from 15 devotees at the ashram who reportedly witnessed the incident were also recorded.
Later Ms. Sandhya met Mata Amritanandamayi.
The team later went to the Karunagapally police station and Ms. Sandhya recorded statements of the division’s senior officers. She inspected the lock-up of the Karunagapally police station where Singh was detained for almost 20 hours.
Later, the statement of the psychiatrist at the Karunagapally Taluk Hospital, who examined Singh after his arrest, was recorded.
The Crime Branch team then visited the district jail here. Crime Branch DySP P. Gopakumar inspected the cell in which Singh was lodged. The statements of the jail authorities were recorded.
The Crime Branch team did not visit the district hospital to which Singh was shifted from the jail. But it is learnt that a statement from the duty doctor at the hospital when Singh was brought has been recorded.
Crime Branch sources said that the probe would cover all aspects from Singh’s appearance at the Mata Amritanandamayi Math till his death. If necessary, the probe would also cover Singh’s arrival in Kerala and his whereabouts during the couple of days prior to his arrival at the Math.
