ALAPPUZHA: Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Vayalar Ravi said here on Sunday that CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat should clarify to the public and the cadres on why the party had earlier “declared” Mayawati as a prime ministerial candidate and later “changed” its opinion.

Talking to reporters here after inaugurating an alumni meet of St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School as part of its 108th anniversary celebrations, Mr. Ravi said the CPI(M) general secretary owed an explanation to the people on the party’s “volte face.” The Left parties had openly declared “unity” with Ms. Mayawati, but were now talking against her, he said.

He wondered whether the support to Ms. Mayawati was a mere ploy to remove the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government from power.

Mr. Ravi said a third or alternative front would only help fundamentalist and non-secular parties.
