KOZHIKODE: A shariat court that would play a mediatory role in settling disputes within the Muslim community is proposed to be set up at the Sunni Cultural Centre here.

A spokesperson for the centre said the decision to establish the shariat court for speedy and fair settlement of family disputes as well as issues affecting the Muslim community was announced recently in Mangalore by Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musaliar, Sunni leader and general secretary of the Sunni Scholars’ Organisation of India.

The spokesperson quoted the Sunni leader as saying that the proposed court would be bound by existing laws and legal luminaries were being consulted for its formation.

A committee would be formed soon for the purpose. The details would be announced at the 31st annual convention of the Sunni Cultural Centre to be held in Kozhikode from January 16 to 18.
