Agro-information kiosk set up as part of clinic

Services of clinic open to farmers, researchers

KANNUR: The first ever plant health clinic started under the National Horticultural Mission in the State has become functional at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Panniyur here. The KVK is a frontline agricultural extension centre financed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

KVK officials said here on Thursday that an agro-information kiosk with touch-screen facility was also set up as part of the plant health clinic.

Farmers who visit the KVK could get a wide range of information relating to crop production, crop protection, processing and marketing aspects at on diverse crops of the State. The KVK was also willing to set up similar kiosks at Krishi Bhavans, KVKs and other agricultural extension units in the State in association with HCL Computers, they said.

The services being offered by the clinic includes micronutrient analysis of plant samples. Along with major nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, micronutrients such as iron, copper, manganese, zinc, boron, calcium, magnesium and sulphur also play a major role in plant nutrition, they said adding that deficiency or toxicity of these micronutrients could affect crop growth and yield.

At present, the facilities of the soil testing laboratories under the Department of Agriculture were limited to analysis of major nutrients, they said adding that farmers were not able to get micronutrient recommendations.

The service of the clinic was open not only to the farmers but to the agricultural researchers and extension functionaries of the State as well.

The clinic has sophisticated state-of-the-art equipment such as atomic absorption spectrophotometer, binocular microscope and salinity meter, among others.

The farmers would also be able get the pests and diseases of crops diagnosed scientifically at the clinic as also science-based remedial measures. Impurities like lead, arsenic, tin, and cadmium could also be analysed in the clinic, the officials said.
