Kozhikode: The Kozhikode Vigilance Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge on Wednesday sentenced a Sub-Inspector to one-year rigorous imprisonment for taking bribe from the owner of as taxi jeep. The officer will also have to pay a fine of Rs.4,000.
Vigilance Judge M.K. Kuttikrishnan held Sub-Inspector P.M. John, who was recently transferred to the Control Room, Thalassery, Kannur district, guilty under Section 7 (public servant taking gratification other than legal remuneration in respect of an official act) and Section 13 (1) (d) (criminal misconduct by a public servant — by obtaining any valuable thing or pecuniary advantage) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
According to the prosecution, John, who was a Sub-Inspector at the Ambalavayil police station, Wayanad, had taken into custody a taxi jeep owned by S.K. Abdul Gafoor on charges of not remitting the tax, on February 13, 2001. The officer demanded Rs.250 from Mr. Gafoor for returning the registration and insurance documents. Mr. Gafoor complained to the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau.
Officials led by Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Sreeshukan arrested the Sub-Inspector while taking the bribe on February 15, 2001, the prosecution said.
