KOLLAM: Anoop Kumar, 24, Youth Congress leader, who died of stab injuries in the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvanathapuram, on Sunday evening was cremated in the compound of his house at Chavara, near here, on Monday.

The police said Anoop was stabbed by Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists on Friday night following an altercation in connection with the Nava Kerala March. Five persons had been arrested.


Pinarayi Vijayan, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), who is leading the march, however, said a fracas at a temple festival led to the stabbing. He said the incident was unfortunate.

After the autopsy at the medical college hospital in the afternoon on Monday, the body was handed over to relatives.

The cortege to Kollam was accompanied by Youth Congress secretary P.C. Vishnunath, MLA, State president T. Siddique and other leaders.

On arrival at Kollam at 5 p.m., the body was taken to the District Congress Committee office.

Among the Congress leaders who arrived there to pay their last respects were V.M. Sudheeran, C.V. Padmarajan, M.I. Shanavas, Kodikunnil Suresh, Kadavoor Sivadasan, Sooranad Rajashekaran, Johnson Abraham, Mannar Abdul Latif, Alphonsa John, V. Sathyaseelan and A. Shanavas Khan.

At Chavara, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala and Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy paid their last respects. After the cremation, a condolence meeting was held there.


A dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Youth Congress and the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Karunagapally taluk on Monday in protest against the murder was total.


There were sporadic incidents of violence.

At Pavumba, near Karunagapally, four Youth Congress workers attacked by some persons have been hospitalised.

The police have registered a case.
