Thiruvananthapuram: The government has sanctioned Rs.5 crore for the development of roads and junctions in the Kovalam Assembly constituency, George Mercier, MLA, said here on Thursday.

The works to be taken up with the budget allocation include the development of the Vellayani-Punnamood, Arumanoor-Pulluvila and Pallichal-Vizhinjam roads at an estimated cost of Rs.2 crore. The Vizhinjam-Poovar and Vellayani temple roads have been included in the Rs.1 crore MLA’s scheme for 2007-08, while the development of the Vizhinjam and Thiruvallam junctions, the Lourdepuram Chinnamarthandam road and construction of side drains and resurfacing of various roads will be taken up under the scheme for the year 2008-09.

An amount of Rs.10 lakh has been sanctioned for the reconstruction of the bund on the Vellayani Lake road and Rs.2.5 lakh for the construction of a culvert bordering the seashore on the Pallichal-Vizhinjam road.

The Finance Commission has sanctioned a separate outlay of Rs.91.5 lakh for the Pallichal-Vizhinjam, Uchakada-Pulinkudi, Balaramapuram-Vizhinjam, Thirupurathur-Pulluvila and Balaramapuram-Poovar roads and the construction of side drains.
