THALASSERY: Lok Sabha Secretary General P.D.T. Achary has said that the country’s democratic system can be strengthened only if MPs and MLAs utilise their special privileges with discretion.

Delivering a talk on ‘Parliamentary privileges in India’ organised by the Kannur University School of Legal Studies on the Thalassery Campus at Palayad here on Friday, Mr. Achary said the people’s representatives should discharge their duties with a sense of great responsibility as the Constitution accorded them special privileges. Some cases involving MPs indicated misuse of the privileges.

Mr. Achary said that national interest and people’s interest should be taken into consideration by the MPs in their interventions in parliamentary proceedings. The Indian democracy ensured that the people’s representatives could express their opinions without fear and the people could cast their votes in a free and fair election. Democracy was a great achievement as far as the people of the country were concerned. Despite deficiencies, the Indian parliamentary system was a testimony to democratic consciousness in the country, he added.

The function was inaugurated by University Pro Vice-Chancellor K. Kunhikrishnan. Syndicate member P. Babu Anto presided.
