NEDUMBASSERY: The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) academy signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) recently to create a human resource base in the domain of aviation management and technology.

The MoU, a first of its kind in India where an airport operator joins hands with the country’s largest university, seeks to give recognition to the aviation training and certification programmes to be launched by the CIAL academy. The academy, an arm of Cochin International Aviation Services Limited (CIASL) — a fully owned subsidiary of CIAL, plans to offer various certificate programmes, advanced diplomas, undergraduate and post-graduate programmes from the next academic year.

Elaborating on the MoU, Prof. V.N.Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, said that the new academy , with recognition from IGNOU, would be an autonomous institute.Speaking on the occasion, C. G. Krishna Das Nair, managing director, CIAL, said that the patronage of IGNOU would ensure recognition of its courses and this would raise the prospects of employability of students passing out from the academy.

He also said that the institute would adopt a industry-institution collaborative model and would eventually evolve as a centre of excellence in this stream.

A. C. K. Nair, the Airport Director, CIAL, P. Mohammad Ali, Director, CIAL, Ms. Latha Pillai, the pro-vice chancellor of IGNOU, Udai Singh Tolia, Registrar of the IGNOU also spoke on the occasion.
