Actor Asin Thottumkal describes her entry into Bollywood as unexpected

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Actor Asin Thottumkal who shot to fame in Bollywood with her debut film Ghajini, pairing with Aamir Khan, has described her entry into Bollywood as unexpected.

“It was not a calculated move. The (role) happened,” she told reporters at a meet-the-press programme in the city on Sunday.

Now, with a couple of big budget movies in her kitty, this Thodupuzha-born starlet looks at her performances as a learning process. “I am the worst critic of my own acting,” said Asin.

She is currently working on Vipul Shah’s London Dreams alongside Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. Then there is a trilingual international project titled 19th Step from Bharat Bala in English, Japanese and Tamil with Kamal Hassan.

Her name, which means ‘pure’ or ‘without blemish’, is a confluence of Eastern and Western culture. “The word ‘A’ is from Sanskrit and ‘Sin’ is Western. It symbolises the modern Indian,” she explained. In fact, her name is so exotic that she claims to “not have come across anyone with a similar name.”

“My parents did not want me to be segregated on the basis of any caste or religion when they gave me such a unique name,” she said.

Admitting that there is a dearth of women-centric story-lines in Bollywood, Asin who started her career as a model at the age of 14 said that she would love to do a variety of roles. According to her, she finalises a project based on the script, her character in the movie and the director. With competition in Bollywood being intense, Asin believes that her “inborn felicity” for languages has helped her in making her presence felt in Bollywood.

A winner of the Filmfare best debut award for her role in Ghajini, Asin regards her recognitions as an “energizer” for more inspired performances. “But the acceptance from my audience is by far the biggest recognition I can receive,” she said. Asin’s debut in acting was at the age of 15 in the Sathyan Anthikkad flick Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka in 2001.
