KANNUR: Minister for Co-operation and Ports M.V. Raghavan has said that Vizhinjam and Azhikkal will be developed as coastal shipping areas.

Inaugurating the commencement of works for the construction of cargo wharf for the Azhikkal port at the port site here on Monday, the Minister said that the Government had sanctioned Rs.8.5 crores for the first phase of the construction of the cargo wharf at Azhikkal. The first phase work would be completed by March, he added.

Pointing out that the State Government had given priority for the port development, Mr. Raghavan said the cargo wharf project would be given a concrete shape by the UDF Government. The Government was committed to completing the first phase of the project, he added. The Minister said that port facilities at Vizhinjam, Azhikkal, Beypore and Alappuzha would be improved to increase volume of cargo handling there, he said.

Matsyathozhilali Welfare Board chairman A.P. Jayasheelan presided over the function. Harbour Engineering Executive Engineer P.I. Shaikh Pareed, Port Director Capt. Chandrashekharan B. Nair and Port Officer Hari A. Warrier were present.
